Feature Project: Demand High for Heating with Alternative Fuels
Dean has been selling and installing wood-burning furnaces for 22 years, but the demand has never been greater than this fall as the price of fuel oil, propane and natural gas has skyrocketed.
The rural Erhard, MN businessman recently added corn stoves as another alternative in beating the high costs of fuel...
Corn furnaces are gaining popularity in Dean's area, which has traditionally been farm country with farmers growing an abundance of corn. Supply is no problem in the rural area, he noted, and people like being able to support the farmers instead of foreign oil. The main advantage of corn burners is that the corn burns very cleanly and efficiently.
"It's an alternative energy source and not everyone wants to be messing with wood." he explained.
